Comfort Care

In traditional veterinary practice, once a terminal or aggressive disease is diagnosed, pet owners are faced with a tough decision. Often that decision is between advanced treatment, with the hope for a cure, or to do nothing and go home to wait until ‘it’s time’. Comfort care, sometimes called ‘hospice’, provides a third option between these two extremes of care in which the focus is shifted from cure and extending life, towards comfort and improving the quality of remaining life.

Comfort care is more than just pain meds. Dr. Freed is trained in veterinary acupuncture which she utilized to ease a variety of symptoms, from pain and nausea, to anxiety and even decreased appetite. In addition to being a veterinary acupuncturist, Dr. Freed is one of only a few hundred certified hospice and palliative care veterinarians in the world. She has completed training beyond that of most veterinarians to better serve pets and their families as end-of-life approaches. If your pet has been diagnosed with a terminal or untreatable disease a comfort care consultation with Dr. Freed will provide you with needed information, support, and a roadmap for the future.

Virtual consultations are available for clients who may just need a conversation with an experienced and specialized veterinarian. See the virtual support tab.
